If this describes you, Laura Shreve has some insider tips for new buyers like you. A sign consultant, Laura has worked over 20 years at Loumarc Signs. She has guided many people in corporations through the process of buying a business sign.

To make a custom business sign stand out, she recommends you consider the purpose of the sign, research to understand what you need, and match the sign design to the brand image.

Consider the purpose of the sign

Why are you looking for a new sign? Sometimes the reasons are obvious. The paint is faded or the neon in the channel letters are broken. Your company has rebranded, but the sign reflects the old brand. Perhaps it’s simply because the sign is outdated and no longer suits the company’s image. But before you request a quote on a modern version of your existing sign, it helps to understand if your sign is underperforming.

Pull out and look at your business goals. Is your sign helping you reach them? Changing to a new design or changing the paint to a trendy color scheme are not bad upgrades to consider. But improving aesthetics is not enough if the sign fails to fulfill its purpose: attracting customers and allowing people to find you.

Do a little research to understand what you need

How do you figure out what you need? Laura recommends you do some detective work to determine your preferences. Why do this first? Signs are available in hundreds of options in materials, colors, designs and sign types. And Loumarc Signs has the largest selection in the region. But no one has the time to consider them all, and frankly, if you had the time, would you? The benefit of working with a signage company like Loumarc Signs is we can create a one-of-a-kind sign to fit exactly what you prefer.

Choosing a new sign requires more study than most customers realize. The more time you give upfront, the more satisfied you’ll be with the end result.

“I wouldn’t say, ‘This is what you should do’ as a blanket statement because I don’t feel that works. Creating a sign really is a unique (process), as unique as your business,” Laura said.

Input from key people can be valuable in this assessment. Ask the signage committee members:

  • Why do you want to change the sign?
  • What don’t you like about the current sign?
  • What do you like about the current sign?
  • What issues will the new sign need to address?

Seek feedback beyond the committee. You may think you don’t have time, but each group’s perspective will ensure your signage aligns with what is important to visitors and customers. The receptionist and security officer know whether visitors can find you and find their way around the buildings. The receptionist receives the phone calls asking for directions. Security staff are the most likely to hear a visitor say, “I couldn’t find you,” and “I didn’t even know you were here.”

Talking with your high performing salespeople is another way to get good ideas. Encourage them to survey valuable customers. Ask salespeople, “What have clients said to you about our building’s grounds and signage?” Diligent employees also have opinions about how easy they can navigate around the company’s buildings.

You appoint one person (perhaps yourself) to weigh the feedback and decide on the top needs. But don’t keep the results to yourself. Share your needs with your sign consultant. She may ask you more questions. Some customers may wonder if these questions are necessary. But the more information she has, the more likely she will recommend the right product for your situation.

Match the sign design to the brand image

Your marketing department and design team have worked hard to create a recognizable brand. At Loumarc Signs, we understand the company’s investment in hours and dollars. The brand image will carry through to your signage too. So why not put the same amount of attention into the sign?

“I know in this busy world, everybody is like, ‘Just get it done,’ but you want it done right,” Laura said.

You desire a sign to reflect the image you’ve established with your branding and logo design. We believe working with your design team is crucial because each design element needs to fit the company’s brand standard. Because Loumarc Signs started as an advertising agency, our experience also helps us collaborate better. Not every sign company employs people with marketing experience.

There’s a fine balance for the sign to look updated but not blend in with everyone else. Loumarc Signs tailors the sign specific to the business because they custom build it.

“I think that’s really important. There’s a certain look for your company and your sign needs to consistently promote the image, along with your advertising,” she said.
